Old Joe: Are You Guilty of Selling your Soul?
The Catholic Wise Guy begins with a prayer for Old Joe Biden, our Catholic President. “May the Lord bless him and keep him! May he turn away from the evil of abortion and accept the wisdom of the Church with humility!”
Old Joe’s recent comments about abortion after the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court leak reveal a soul filled with darkness that has drifted far from the light of faith. Here are a few comments. “I believe that a woman’s right to choose is fundamental, Roe has been the law of the land for almost fifty years, and basic fairness and the stability of our law demand that it not be overturned.” Roe vs Wade “is in line with all basic mainstream religions.” This is completely false, starting with his own Catholic faith. It is a whopper of whoppers, even for an ageing politician like old Joe. Roe has always been a tough row to hoe for legal minds with integrity. Old Joe has certainly never articulated a coherent argument to support Roe from any position, let alone a Catholic one. Joe’s moral compass points not to the true north of the Church but to the platform of the Democratic Party.
Old Joe has never been the sharpest tool in the politician toolbox and time has dulled his average mind. The Wise Guy cannot make sense of a Catholic saying such things. The CWG cannot think of a more anti-Catholic president than Catholic Old Joe. Glad I am not his bishop.
The Wise Guy offers two explanations for Old Joe’s behavior.
- He is a doddering old fool who doesn’t understand his faith or what he is saying.
- He has sold his soul to the devil.
Let us examine explanation #1. The “doddering old fool (DOF)” description is obvious to anyone who watches old Joe answer questions or talk off script. Rumors float around that old Joe’s staff and DC insiders accept the DOF description but no one will go on record.
A knowledgeable Catholic, the Wise Guy can confidently state Old Joe does not understand his faith. Explanation #1 has validity.
The Wise Guy always tries to remain anchored in Wisdom and the Truth. But in some cases – and this is such a case – speculation may assist us in entering the hallowed halls of Wisdom. Of course, theory #2 is a tad far-fetched. Since post-Christian Americans may not be familiar with the Selling your soul concept, the Wise Guy will now enlighten you on it. “Selling Your Soul” means trading your soul to the devil in exchange for earthly benefits. Many do not believe in a “soul” or “the devil.” But serious Christians and those in the occult do believe in a “soul” and “the devil.”
The idea of selling one’s soul to the devil originated in Germany in the 1500s with the story of Faust, who sold his to Lucifer for knowledge and power. (Another bad idea from Germany.) Selling one’s soul is an exchange of goods. The devil grants you one or more desires in your life – fame, fortune, love, knowledge, power – and in return you agree to spend eternity with him in hell. Jesus provides a famous description of hell in Mark 9:48, comparing it to the always burning, maggot-ridden garbage dump outside of Jerusalem, “where ‘their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.’” Spending eternity with Satan in hell in exchange for temporary temporal blessings does not strike the Wise Guy as a bargain. Eternity is a long time. The devil delights each time there is a selling of the soul, gobbling up another victim with minimal effort. Some of you may have pleasant memories of sitting around campfires, sharing stories, roasting hot dogs and fixing s’mores. This is not in any way analogous to the painful and all-consuming fire of hell. The only sharing consists in hearing the screams of despair coming from your fellow hellmates.
A few more points before closing. Some inquire about selling your soul to God. The Wise Guy has researched this and assures you Christianity lacks any practical or theoretical justification for it. You cannot sell your soul to God – you give it to him. He desperately desires it; He loves you and wants you to spend eternity with Him in heaven. As for Satan, you can give him your soul or to sell it to him. Many freely give the Father of Darkness their soul without receiving much in return. Some are smart enough to at least receive some earthly remuneration. For the procrastinators and fence-sitters, the Wise Guy notes that eternity is a binary choice. Every person on earth must choose his eternal Soul Mate – it’s either God or Satan
Yes, it is speculation to assert our president has sold his soul to Satan There is no smoking gun: an email, a paper trail, an audio, a laptop, or video tape. But it is prudent speculation. In all wisdom, how can we rule out a crazy explanation for the crazy, immoral behavior of Old Joe, our Catholic anti-Catholic president? How do we account for his political blessings which are well beyond his ability? Who knows – Old Joe may not realize he has sold his soul; Hunter may have arranged the deal.
Piling sin upon sin, Old Joe’s soul remains in peril. He has become a facilitator of massive evil while continuing to receive holy communion.
The Wise Guy closes this essay the way he began – with prayer. (This is good – bracketing an essay with prayer.)
“Let us pray that Old Joe repent! We petition the Lord for his salvation!
