Sanctuary States for the Unborn
The Catholic Wise Guy beams with pride for his home state, which recently passed a law providing extensive protection for the unborn. Indiana has become a sanctuary state for the unborn and their mothers. Here life will be protected and honored. Indiana is providing a safe space for life inside and outside the womb.
Providing this sanctuary for the unborn does not please everyone. The Indianapolis Star has fired missile after angry missile at the state capitol because of this law. Two of our major companies – Eli Lily and Cummins Engine – have criticized the law and indicated future expansion of their business will be outside the state. According to them, the educated and the enlightened do not want to reside in a sanctuary state for the unborn.
Many, perhaps the majority, of American companies, undermine and even attack sanctuaries for the unborn. They feel comfortable in a holocaust state, such as New York or California. But other companies support sanctuaries for the unborn. Over time there may be a migration of companies and families with one group heading to sanctuary states and the other to holocaust states. The Wise Guy cannot predict the economic consequences of Indiana becoming a sanctuary state but knows that Wisdom and money rarely travel together. Standing for the true and the good sometimes produces harmful consequences for individuals and societies; that’s why it takes courage to follow Wisdom.
We could end up in a pattern reminiscent of 1850s America when the country was divided between slave and free states. After the demise of Roe v. Wade in 2022, each state will choose whether to become a sanctuary or holocaust state.
The flag of Indiana is flying especially high because it was a free state in the 1850s and is a sanctuary state in 2022. It has stood with the true and the good during both slavery and abortion across three centuries. Other states have “changed sides.” New York was a free state but has embraced the darkness of a holocaust for the unborn. Mississippi, a slave state, has moved to the light and become a sanctuary state.
May the trumpet of Justice blow loud and awaken the sleeping consciences of the Woke, making all 50 states sanctuary states.
